Malawians living in Kenya have assembled two tonnes of assorted items to support about 200 000 Malawians who have been displaced by floods.

Chairperson of the Association of Malawians in Kenya (Amake), Robert Hanjahanja, said on Wednesday the items included clothing, blankets, zitenje and shoes.

“The goods have been loaded in trucks and are now being transported to Malawi where World Vision Malawi will distribute them to affected communities on our behalf,” Hanjahanja said in a statement made available to The Nation.

He thanked Malawians and Kenyans who contributed towards the cause.

“The Malawi High Commission in conjunction with Amake is grateful to those who responded in kind towards the flood relief initiative. The response was overwhelming and we are sure our brothers and sisters in Malawi will be well helped by the goods,” he said.

Acting national director for World Vision Kenya, Lawrence Kiguro, hailed Amake for the assistance and assured the gathering that the goods would reach the intended beneficiaries.

The handover ceremony was graced by Malawi High Commissioner in Kenya brigadier general Marcel Chirwa (Rtd).

According to Hanjahanja, a fund-raising event for the same cause will be held on February 7 2014.
